I love this screenshot, do you want to know why? Keep reading then.
- Vista is a Microsoft product and the blue screen of death proves it. Yes, it is still on Windows Vista, believe it or not (the small screenshot was taken with VMware Workstation)
- Vista looks very nice:
Immediately noticeable is the new translucent effect on the Start menu and window borders, a professional-looking "glass" design enhanced by subtle effects such as dynamic reflections and smooth animations. Designed for comfort and simplicity, the new "glass" windows convey a sense of lightweight openness that frees you to focus on your content rather than your environment.
Available to PCs using a compatible graphics adapter and running the Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise edition of Windows Vista
This means that Home edition does not contains Windows Aero, so if you want a "more stable desktop experience" then you will have to show the money. Better change OS! - Fedora does not only contain built-in transparency but themes can be downloaded. I downloaded the OSX theme. When I say transparency I mean real transparency. I can even apply transparency on Windows XP, have a look to the workspace on the right.
- Transparency using Beryl can be applied not only on window frames but on the window as well.
- I have heard comments of people who has to disable Windows Aero because it is a killer application (uses all your hardware resources). When I took the screenshot I was not only running transparency on various windows, running Windows on VMware (that means 2 OS simultaneously) and playing the IBM video (ups, the player looks like Windows Media Player 11). You are right, the computer was not running at its normal speed. I would like to remind you I was running WindowsXP as well!
- I nearly forget, the cube is what my workspace looks like. I mean, I can move to different "desktops", rotate them, zoom in and out without the tedious Windows magnifying glass. I can rotate the cube right, left and even up and down.
- I don't want to mention the wobble, minimize, maximize and window fade effects. The window borders get glued to the border of the screen. Live thumbnails can be seen in the taskbar (also included in Vista) and you can choose between many different window pickers (Alt+Tab).
- Did I mention Linux is FREE? This means US$0.00 Only one problem: you will need to know some basics and will take a couple of weeks to get used to it. However, after 6 months with Fedora, who want to go back to Windows?
